) The historical antecedents of the locality go back to the Roman time testifying to a discovery in 1984 by archeological findings emphasized by a marble statue of a feminine figure. Of the same date is the Bridge, a spectacular architectonic work on the boulevard of Huéchar, having used the mined stones of the mountain range of Gádor. Yet, the past of Alhama is intimately bound to the Arab culture. The existence of a strong strategic enclave and its thermal baths contributed to the importance and prestige of the town that, nevertheless, underwent the abandonment and desolation with the expulsion of the Arabs in 1570. The Spa town is surrounded by three different landscapes: the valley of Andarax, the mountainrange of Gádor and the desert of Tabernas.

Alhama of Almería is the place of entrance to the Alpujarras in the province of Almería. The Andalusian patrimony of this village is related to water, either by its medicinal baths or to the advantage for agriculture. Remains of Arabic thermal baths or Alhammamare (meaning thermal baths in Arab) are conserved in the hotel-Spa of San Nicholas. We can also visit the Cruz de Arriba. On the hill Cerro de la Cruz is the Nazarí fortress, which is in direct line of sight with the fortress of Marchena and the Castle of Mondújar.

The mining of the mountain range of Gádor and the exploitation of grapes brought prosperity to the town. Mansions of rich proprietors were being built, like those of Santiesteban, Paniagua, the Clubs, or most famous the Los Caballitos (the Ponies), taking its name of the faucets in the house and having shapes of fantastic animals of east asian influence adorning the outside of the building.

Ohanes ( 766 Habitantes Altitud: 958 m.

Ohanes ( 766 Inhabitants Altitude: 958 m. ) The first vestiges of the human presence are of the Neólitic period, emphasizing the caves of Nieles and Almecena. In the Roman era the town was in the proximity of the Roman road Gador-Abla-Fiñana-Guadix. The first Arabs arriving in Ohanes were Yemenites but the Muladíes (Hispanics turned to the Islam) considered the Yemenites unwanted foreigners and continuously rose against them. The Mozarabes added to even more conflicts and continued until 912, when Abderramán the third assumed the califat of Cordova decided to withstand these rebellions in 913, in Fiñana, crossing the Sierra Nevada, at Ohanes and the pass Puerto de la Ragua, to conquer all the castles in the Alpujarras. Later, after the restoration of the kingdoms of the Taifas (the alpujarreños districts of tahá denominations) Ohanes belonged at first to the Taha de Hichar, being its centre, although later in time Canjayar became its centre.

Before the reconquista the Alpujarras became under the control of Zagal, uncle of Boabdil. The surrendering of the Moors finalized the reconquista on 2nd of January 1492. The Moors of the Alpujarras rebelled several occasions: in 1500 -1501 and most importantly the uprise in1568 -1570, when the Moors were led by Aben Humeya and later by Aben Abó. By order of Felipe II, the Moors were exiled from the Alpujarras to the province of Castile to repopulate Ohanes with 36 families from Guadalajara, Sacedón, Zafra, etc.

In 1752 Ohanes inhabited 468 people dedicated to agriculture and the textile industry. During the War of Independence (June of 1810) the mayor of Otivar, followed by Francisco Moreno "the black man " of Ohanes and other mayors of Válor, Berja and Dalías were put down by the population. Between 1810 -1811 French troops conquered Ohanes. The municipal supplied the French wheat provisions but in 1812 the guerrillas of Francisco Moreno defeated the French occupiers of Ohanes.
